Firefighter Townsend was working a ground crew cold trailing behind a truck when weather conditions changed and the fire blew-up between the ground crew and the truck. The ground crew began to run parallel to the road away from the fire. After running approximately 300 yards, Firefighter Townsend fell in a slight saddle of the ridge. At that time, the fire again blew-up from accumulated gases in the saddle and Firefighter Townsend was killed.
