July 26th, 1979 Firefighter Kyle Pattee (US Forest Service) was assigned to the “Ship Island Fire” burning near Leesburg, Idaho. Pattee was operating as a lookout with another firefighter at a helispot when the fire spotted below them. The pair warned other firefighters operating in the area to escape to their safety zones. Meanwhile Pattee and the second firefighter attempted to move supplies that had been left at the helispot into the center of the clearing, so as to protect it from the approaching flames. Conditions quickly intensified, causing both men to deploy fire shelters. Pattee died in the entrapment. He was 29 years old. The second firefighter survived.
